MEBARE BURLAP COLLECTION STORY
The seed for this collection was planted over years of global travel, a plethora of enlightening adventures and a variety of shared life experiences. It was clarified through interactions with diverse cultures, people and foreign materials. And finally, it was brought to life through unwavering dedication and determination.
After receiving a burlap coffee sack from his father, Grason Ratowsky found the inspiration that ultimately led to the creation of the BARE Burlap Collection.
“RIGHT AWAY I SAW VALUE IN THE BURLAP COFFEE SACKS, BUT MOST OF ALL I LOVED THE STORY BEHIND THEM. EACH BAG SEEMED TO HAVE ITS OWN LIFE; ITS OWN UNIQUE SET OF EXPERIENCES. MOST HAD TRAVELED ACROSS THE WORLD, STARTING IN SOME DISTANT COFFEE PRODUCTION REGION, BEFORE BEING PACKED FULL OF BEANS AND THEN CARRIED THROUGH JUNGLES, DOWN VOLCANOES AND ACROSS OCEANS PRIOR TO GETTING HERE.”
But it wasn’t only the story behind the bags that intrigued Grason. The material itself fascinated him.
“I LOVED THE BURLAP MATERIAL OF THE COFFEE SACKS, BOTH PHYSICALLY AND VISUALLY. THE INDESTRUCTIBLE NATURE OF THE JUTE WEAVE ALLOWED THESE BAGS TO CARRY HUNDREDS OF POUNDS OF COFFEE BEANS. IT WAS AN ANCIENT, TIME-TESTED MATERIAL YET STILL RELEVANT TODAY, LIKE A BRIDGE BETWEEN PAST AND PRESENT. THE HEAVY, DARK PRINT AND COLORFUL LOGOS WERE EVEN MORE INTRIGUING. THEY GAVE CLUES ABOUT EACH BAGS TRAVELS, THEIR COUNTRY OF ORIGIN, THE PORTS THEY HAD DOCKED AND THE CUSTOMS CHECKS THEY HAD PASSED. IT WAS A PUZZLE; A BEAUTIFUL, FRAGMENTED TIMELINE THAT ADDED TO THEIR MAGNIFICENCE AND WONDER.”
Always one to take matters into his own hands, Grason watched some online sewing tutorials, built the first rough prototypes and shared them with Justin.
“What do you think?” He asked. Justin responded without hesitation, “this is our company.”
The friends never looked back. From that humble, organic beginning, the BARE Burlap Collection was brought to life.
The BARE Burlap Collection is for the traveler in us all. It speaks to our desires for exploration, adventure, and new experiences. It’s a point of connection between ancient traditions and craftsmanship, modern day elegance and simplistic design.
